Poker Tells: Reading Your Opponents at the Table

A tell is a physical or behavioral clue that reveals information about a player's hand. Mastering the art of reading tells can give you a significant edge at the table.

Common Physical Tells

Shaking hands often indicate genuine excitement, usually signaling a strong hand. Players who stare directly at you after betting are often bluffing, trying to intimidate you into folding. Conversely, players who look away after betting often have a real hand and are trying to appear non-threatening.

Betting Pattern Tells

A sudden change in bet sizing can reveal hand strength. Players who bet quickly on the river are often value betting, while those who tank for a long time before betting large are frequently bluffing.

Speech Tells

When a player talks about their hand during action, listen carefully. Players describing strength often have weak hands and vice versa. Unsolicited information at the poker table is usually unreliable by design.

Remember that skilled opponents are aware of tells and may deliberately give false signals. Use tells as one piece of the puzzle rather than your sole basis for decisions.
